DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), went dark for an hour Saturday to join the worldwide celebration of Earth Hour.
Burj Khalifa stands at 829.8 meters tall and towers over its nearest rival, the soon to be completed Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, China, which stands at 632 meters.
From 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, the Burj Khalifa turned off all non-essential lights in all of its 163 floors as part of Earth Hour.
The Earth Hour movement, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages people all over the world to switch off their light for 60 minutes to conserve energy and in turn produce less greenhouse gases.
Originally started in Australia back in 2007, Earth Hour now involves millions of people from thousands of cities all over the world.
Other places in Dubai that switched off its non-essential lights include Downtown Dubai, Dubai Airports, Dubai festival city, among others.
