Australian unemployment rises slightly to 5.3%

SYDNEY, Australia?Australian unemployment rose 0.2 percentage points to 5.3 percent in July, worse than economists' estimates, official figures showed on Thursday.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said 24,600 more people became unemployed, offset by the creation of 23,500 jobs.

Analysts had forecast no change from the June figure of 5.1 percent. The latest data was released just nine days from national elections in which the economy is a key factor.
