Linggo de Lingua Europa this week

MANILA, Philippines?Following the success of Linggo de Lingua Europa I and II, the European Union member states' embassies and the EU cultural institutes, together with the Delegation of the EU to the Philippines and academic institutions will hold the Week of European Languages for the third time from 27 to 31 July 2010.

Academic institutions joining this year include: Lyceum of the Philippines University, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Miriam College, and Ateneo de Manila University. The University of the Philippines-Diliman and St. Paul?s Manila University, host universities last year, are actively supporting the event.

Students, faculty members, and language enthusiasts are welcome to join the fun-filled weeklong celebration and experience the wonders of learning new languages and knowing more about the European culture.

The Linggo de Lingua Europa III kicks off with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on 27 July followed by language demonstrations (Czech, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish); cooking demo performed by Chef Pâtissier Sébastien Cocquery from the Peninsula Manila and Go Navigate and the exciting Iron Chef. The president of the Lyceum of the Philippines University lawyer Roberto P. Laurel and Holger Rommen, Head of Contracts and Finance Section of the Delegation of the EU to the Philippines, will open the Linggo de Lingua Europa III. Ms. Emilie Flambeaux of the French Embassy will provide a background and overview about the festivities.

On 28 July in the afternoon, the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde will have languages classes (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish) and the EU Quiz. On 29 July, booths, film festival, language demo classes, and video show will highlight the events in Miriam College from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Ateneo de Manila University will also have booths on studies in Europe on 30 July starting 1:30 p.m. The Delegation of the EU to the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University are organizing a bloggers' event dubbed "Trek Around Europa." A conference called "European Languages for Your Future: A Talk" will conclude the events in Ateneo de Manila University.

The Linggo de Lingua Europa will officially close in Instituto Cervantes, Kalaw St., Manila with awarding of prizes, speeches, and songs on Saturday, July 31 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The EU's policy of multilingualism has been an important tool toward achieving economic competitiveness, growth and better jobs, promoting lifelong learning and intercultural dialogue and nurturing a space for EU?s political dialogue through multilingual communication with its almost 500 million citizens.

This weeklong celebration is a creative and dynamic way to encourage Filipino students and professionals to learn other EU languages especially relevant in these globalized times when being multilingual means fostering personal growth, enhancing skills, and promoting greater chances for mobility.
