BEIJING--Following the successful commutation of the death sentences of two Filipinas in Kuwait, the Philippines is set to discuss an agreement on the exchange of sentenced persons with the Middle Eastern kingdom, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo has said.
Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will visit the Philippines from August 14 to 16. His will be one of the three state visits that Malacanang will host this month.
The other two are Timor Leste President Jose Ramos Horta and Swiss President Pascal Couchepin, who will both arrive Sunday in Manila. Horta's visit will last until August 14, while Couchepin's until August 12.
The death penalty for Filipinos Marilou Ranario and May Vecina were commuted this year on the intercession of the Philippine government.
The sentence on Ranario, who was convicted of killing her employer January 2005, was commuted December 2007, while that on Vecina, who was convicted of killing her employer's seven-year-old son, slitting the 13-year-old son's throat, and stabbing the 17-year-old daughter January 2007, was commuted July this year.
