MANILA, Philippines—Five overseas Filipino workers were killed in a road accident in Al-Batha in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last week, the Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

Assistant Secretary Claro Cristobal said the fatalities were all passengers of a pickup truck that collided with and then slid under a trailer truck near the border of United Arab Emirates on the night of July 25.

Cristobal said the Philippine embassy in Saudi Arabia has yet to submit the names of the victims, who are now at the morgue of the King Fahad Hospital in Al-Hassa in Hofuf, about three hours drive from Riyadh.

“Embassy officials are making preparations for the repatriation of the remains,” he said.

But media reports from Saudi Arabia identified the OFWs as Marcelito Obon, Roberto Hornilla, Antonio Reyno, Johnny Gregorio and Ronald Valdez.

According to reports, the heads of Obon and Hornilla were severed from their bodies because of the accident. Both worked as pipe fitters for the same company.

The OFWs were reportedly employed by three separate companies in the Eastern Region. At the time of the accident, they were working on an Aramco project at the Saudi Arabia-UAE boundary.

Reyno and Gregorio were employed by different companies as mechanics while Valdez’s employer was still being determined.
