The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors finalized their entry into the semifinals of the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament after emerging victorious, 85-63, in their quarterfinal match with the Don Bosco College (DBC) Greywolves on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win set up a rematch with the seven-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, whom the Warriors have not defeated in the finals in the last two years.
USC made short work of DBC as they zoomed off to an early 15-point lead in the first period, 26-11, behind the brilliance of Cid Cortes and Fil-foreign players, Emel Rowe and Eddie Bakker.
Cortez led the way for the Warriors with 15 points, while Bakker and Rowe each had 10 as 13 players scored for USC.
Not to be outdone, the USC Baby Warriors kept their season alive as they eked out a 64-58 win over the third-seeded University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers in the quarterfinals of the juniors division.
The wards of head coach Roland Remedio fought gallantly against the Baby Panthers, who were armed with a twice-to-beat advantage by virtue of their higher finish in the elimination round.
John Monteron and Lloyd Nacua donned the heroes’ cape for the Baby Warriors as they combined for 27 points and helped keep the USPF gunners from finding their mark.
Arthur Casalari was the lone scorer in double figures for USPF with 12 points.
Both teams figure in a rubbermatch for the last semifinals seat on Thursday, and the right to face the defending champions UV Baby Lancers in the next round.
The Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens barged into the semifinals as well, disposing the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 94-63.
Kenneth Getalla led all scorers with 21 points while Wilkin Sanchez added 20 markers.
Rookie sensation Mark Jayven Tallo was held to just seven points in limited minutes.
