CEBU CITY, Philippines - Shortly after the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) reaffirmed its support for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña asked the beleaguered chief executive to visit Cebu City.
If her schedule permits, Arroyo may drop by City Hall on March 28 after she attends the wedding of the son of Capitol Site barangay (village) Councilor Felix Guanzon.
Osmeña said they have yet to prepare a program for the presidential visit, but added, “We will be working on that.”
The mayor wanted Arroyo to hand the Gawad Galing Pook award to the city for implementing the barangay justice system or the Lupong Tagamapayapa.
Osmeña invited Arroyo to come to Cebu City when she met with some city mayors in Malacañang last Monday.
“But the only thing I asked her is if she could come here on March 28,” Osmeña told Cebu Daily News.
The LCP members went to Malacañang to reaffirm their “solid” support to the Arroyo administration and the President’s economic agenda, amidst the broadband network scandal rocking her administration.
The mayors were supposed to be photographed in a “unity walk” with Arroyo after handing their manifesto of support to her but the activity was cancelled due to heavy rains.
“While there have been indirect allegations imputed against the President, these have not been examined nor proven with strict observance to and compliance with the prosecutorial and judicial proceedings required by our laws,” the manifesto read.
It said the allegations remain unsubstantiated. The political “noise” in Metro Manila, the manifesto, said does not represent the sentiments of people from other parts of the country.
“It is time to focus efforts on real work for the betterment of our countrymen and to put aside bickering and power play which will only benefit those behind the attempts to overthrow the government,” it added.
City mayors said there are more pressing needs that the administration need to attend to like roads, better educational and health services, potable water system, among others.
