SENIOR Supt. Jesus Gaquing, Cebu provincial police director, yesterday admitted that the police were faring poorly in the campaign against loose firearms.

He said the police were only able to seize 51 unlicensed firearms in August, way below the target of 300.

Gaquing held a command conference yesterday with the chiefs of police of municipalities and component cities.

Police have two programs for loose firearms: the Oplan Bilang Boga for firearms for expired license and Kontra Boga for unlicensed firearms.

Gaquing ordered the police chiefs to double their efforts and to be aggressive in the campaign since the firearms might be used during the 2010 elections.

?We will try our best to meet the quota to ensure an honest, orderly and peaceful elections in 2010,? said Gaquing.

Supt. Elmer Lim, chief of Danao City police, said cutting the number of loose firearms in the city is a a daunting task since gun-making is the means of living of most people in the city.

Danao has two cooperatives authorized to manufacture guns.

The gun amnesty program will end on Oct. 31.
