A NUMBER of Cebuanos would flock to a building along Osmeña Boulevard as early as 4 a.m.
They all wanted to get the chance to try out thermal acupressure therapy for free.
Some of them were suffering from high blood pressure. Others had back pains.
They all lined up waiting for their turn to experience the 40 minute-massage and acupressure on a bed equipped with jade rollers.
Korean Jeong Youn ?Julia? Joo called the bed the ?Nuga Best Therapeutic Thermal Massager or simply ?Nuga Best Bed.?
Julia, who introduced the bed in Cebu in 2006, however, is not claiming that the Nuga Best Bed can cure diseases and illnesses.
She said the bed merely provides a soothing massage combined with acupressure and the jade rollers for deep penetrating heat and far-infrared light therapy, which she claims, helps increase and balance the functions of the body for well-being.
She described the technique as ?preventive intervention.?
?Once your bodily functions are balanced and restored, then your body can heal itself,? said Jeong.
Julia stressed that their bed could cure or heal diseases.
?We are not fighting against doctors or hospital treatment especially when a client?s disease is already in an advance stage,? she said.
She encouraged patients to follow the doctor's advice and regularly take their maintenance medicines.
Raffy, who works in an office in the North Reclamation Area, said that after undergoing the 40-minute massage his back pain was lessened.
Julia claimed that the bed could help boost the body's immune system by helping restore the body's central nervous system.
The Nuga Best firm has a 20-year history in South Korea. It first opened its head office in Manila in 2005 with Julia as its general manager. In 2006, the firm expanded in Cebu.
The Nuga Best bed is its primary product, which the firm sells at P135,000.
But for Julia, bringing Nuga Best to Cebu was not entirely a business venture.
It was also to promote health and wellness to Cebuanos by offering them the use of the Nuga Best products for free on the 3rd floor of the Cebu Long Se Temple building along Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.
The Cebu branch is equipped with 22 Nuga Best beds and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It could entertain about 300 patients per day.
?We offer sessions for free because we are confident about our product,? said Julia.
She said it is also their way of accommodating clients who are not well off.
Nuga is the Korean way of pronouncing Luke, the biblical healer.
Julia said letting customers experience the benefits of the Nuga bed also help promote the product through word of mouth.
Since 2006, Nuga Best has branches along A.S. Fortuna Street in barangay Banilad, Mandaue City where the customers pay P200 per session.
Per session in barangay Casuntingan is cheaper at P50 fee.
At the A.S. Fortuna Branch, the customers do not have to line up.
Julia brought her sister to help in the marketing as they have now opened franchise for their Nuga Best.
