Cebuano to represent country in Chile summit

Global Voices Online Philippine contributor Karlo Mikhail Mongaya will be representing the country in the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit 2010 on May 6 and 7 at the Santiago Public Library in Chile.

The Citizen Media Summit will gather a diverse group of bloggers, IT experts, citizen media activists, journalists and press freedom advocates from all over the world for a two-day public conference on the theme ?Next generation citizen media, public access and citizen participation.?

The summit program will include plenary discussions, topic-based breakout groups and open sessions in which participants can propose discussion topics and hands-on training workshops. Showcases of select citizen media projects will be interspersed throughout the event.

This will be followed by a two-day internal meeting for Global Voices editors, translators and contributors from May 8 to 9.

The Global Voices Citizen Media Summit 2010 is sponsored by Google, MacArthur Foundation, Open Society Institute, Knight Foundation, Hivos, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Yahoo, with support from Fundacion Ciudadano Inteligente and the Observatorio de Comunicaciones Digitales.

Global Voices Online is an international community of bloggers who report and translate on blogs and citizen media from around the world, with emphasis on voices that are not ordinarily heard in international mainstream media.

Karlo has been writing on Philippine political issues and controversies, environmental concerns and cultural phenomenon for Global Voices Online since November 2008. These articles have been translated in 13 languages.

He is a consistent honor student while studying literature at the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Arts and Science in Miag-ao town, Iloilo.

Karlo, a Cebuano, is the editor in chief of the UPV-CAS official student publication, Pagbutlak, and the coordinator of the Iloilo formation of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines.

He was also student council chairman and national vice-chairman of the Katipunang ng mga Sangguniang Mag-aaral sa UP (KASAMA sa UP), the UP systemwide alliance of student councils, from 2005 to 2006 while studying business management at the UPV Cebu College.

He is the son of Sun.Star Cebu and Superbalita columnist Emmanuel Mongaya and PRWorks managing director Doris Isubal-Mongaya.
