Mandaue City residents, who are working abroad and are now home for the holidays, wanted to also make use of their visit by reaching out to the poor Mandauehanons.
They organized a two-day medical and dental mission starting on Monday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center. The activity was launched yesterday, 5:30 p.m. at the Parkmall at the North Reclamation Area, Cebu City, in cooperation with the Mandaue City government; Kaabag, a non-government organization and the Rotary Club of Mandaue. The activity aims to unite all balikbayans for the purpose of "contributing something for the development of Mandaue City."
"The idea of helping the city, particularly the medical-dental mission started with a chat with fellow Mandauehanons," said Dr. Stella Cortes-Fabia, the elder sister of Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.
Dr. Fabia who works at the Ma. Reyna Hospital as training director for the Internal Medicine Department and the North Mindanao Medical Center started to contact other Mandauehanons to organize the medical and dental mission.
She first got in touch with Merla Suico, president of Mandauehanons Inc. based in Southern California who also contacted Dr. Grace Bautista of Georgia, their link to Rotary Club of Georgia and Sta. Barbara Medical Mission Group, organizer of medical missions in the country.
During the scheduled two-day medical mission, beneficiaries coming from the city's 27 barangays (villages) could avail of the services of well known Manila-based neurologist Dr. Martesio Perez.
Aside from the medical mission, the group will also conduct "operation tuli" or free circumcisions.
Volunteer doctors from the United States, Chong Hua Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital and volunteer-nurses from the Cebu Doctors Hospital will also be helping in the medical mission. The dental services will be provided by the Mandaue Dental Association.
