MANILA, Philippines—An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in France landed in jail after her 10-month-old ward drowned, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

The incident happened on March 12 when the OFW, whose identity was withheld, allegedly left the baby in a tub, the foreign office said.

It said Paris police informed the Philippine Embassy about the Filipino woman’s arrest.

“The embassy immediately exerted all efforts to ensure that our OFW was provided with a lawyer so that she would be amply represented,” the DFA said.

It added that the OFW was transferred to the Fleury Merogis prison in the suburbs of Paris on Friday.

“She was also given a court-appointed lawyer. But the embassy’s request for a jail visit has not yet been granted,” the DFA said, adding that the woman’s next of kin in the Philippines had been informed of the incident.
