Malaysia’s Ibrahim denies backing armed Filipinos in Sabah

MANILA, Philippines – Malaysian opposition leader Datu Anwar Ibrahim denied his involvement in the Sabah incursion of armed Filipinos from Sulu during an interview Thursday with Radyo Inquirer 990AM.

“The presence of militant insurgents is to me unacceptable. I believe the security forces have to act swiftly,” Ibrahim said during the interview.

“We cannot allow militant activity within our borders,” he added.

Ibrahim had allegedly encouraged the incursion of an estimated 200 members of the Sultanate of Sulu into Sabah to reclaim what they say is their rightful territory.

Malaysian security forces had conducted air and ground assaults against the group in Tanduao Village, Lahad Datu Tuesday after weeks of tense standoff and failed negotiations and several skirmishes that left many dead on both sides.
