Australian, 2 others nabbed in Makati for depositing fake dollars

MANILA, Philippines — An Australian national and two accomplices were arrested early Thursday morning for depositing counterfeit United States dollars at a commercial bank in Barangay San Lorenzo, Makati City.

According to a report by the Southern Police District (SPD), the suspects deposited $496,000 (roughly equivalent to P29,274,416) in $100 bills, which were then confirmed fraudulent by a representative of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The SPD identified the suspects as alias “Emanuel,” a 42-year-old Australian national and tourist; alias “Jessirose,” a 59-year-old working as a human resources personnel of a foundation; and alias “Imelda,” a 59-year-old retired accountant.

The suspects will face complaints for illegal possession and use of false treasury or banknotes and other instruments of credit.

In a statement, SPD Director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang said the police district would “step up its campaign against counterfeiters,” warning the public to be vigilant with banknotes, especially in light of the upcoming holiday season.
