Bongbong Marcos deeply saddened by 3 fishers’ death off Scarborough Shoal

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed deep sadness over the incident off Scarborough Shoal that led to the death of three Filipino fishermen.

At the same time, the President urged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions.

“We are deeply saddened by the [death] of the three fishermen, including the captain of the fishing vessel,” Marcos said on Twitter.

“The incident is still under investigation to ascertain the details and circumstances surrounding the collision between the fishing boat and a still unidentified commercial vessel,” he noted.

The chief executive said the Philippine Coast Guard is now “backtracking and checking” all monitored vessels in the area as it begins an investigation into the tragedy.

“Let us allow the PCG to do its job and investigate, and let us refrain from engaging in speculation in the meantime,” Marcos asked the public.

He also said the families of the victims will receive help.

“We assure the victims, their families, and everyone that we will exert every effort to hold accountable those responsible for this unfortunate maritime incident,” he said.

“Rest assured that the government will provide support and assistance to the victims and their families,” he added.

On Wednesday, PCG confirmed that the unidentified vessel, which collided with a Philippine fishing boat, hoisted a foreign flag.

It did not provide further details.
