US cruise ships to hire 75,000 Filipino crew members over 4 years

A lawmaker is optimistic that the planned hiring of 75,000 Filipino seafarers by American companies will pave the way for brighter opportunities for the country’s maritime industry.
House overseas workers’ affairs panel chair Rep. Ron Salo said this was also proof that other nations trust the competence of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) employed in different industries.
In a statement on Wednesday, Salo said the development was “truly inspiring for all Filipinos, particularly our seafarers and their families.”
“It is proof of the tireless efforts of this administration to create more employment opportunities for our people. Likewise, it is a resounding proof of the world-class quality of the Filipino seafarers,” the Kabayan party list representative said.
He added: “This is truly a momentous occasion for our seafarers and the entire maritime industry. This development not only underscores the skills and expertise of our Filipino seafarers, but also highlights the confidence of the international community in our workers.”
He made the remarks after Malacañang announced that several US companies will be hiring 75,000 Filipino seafarers over the next three to four years.
The Palace quoted John Padgett, president and chief executive of the popular cruise company Carnival Corp. Padgett represented Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Seabourn in a meeting with President Marcos in Washington.
Padgett told the President that his group of companies would be employing Filipino seafarers in the next few years, praising OFWs for their hospitality and competitiveness.
Salo said the planned hiring of Filipino seafarers also highlighted the strong partnership between the Philippines and the United States,” which will bring more opportunities for the maritime industry and the country in general.
He assured that Congress will continue working on legislative measures that will support and assist Filipino seafarers.
“The committee on overseas workers’ affairs shall continue to work hard [to ensure] that our seafarers and cadets are provided with the necessary support and assistance they need to succeed in their chosen profession,” Salo said.
