DFA: 2,233 Filipinos abroad have new coronavirus as of May 12

MANILA, Philippines — Another 38 Filipinos abroad have contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 2,233, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

The latest DFA data likewise showed that the number of fatalities among overseas Filipinos due to COVID-19 increased to 261 with one new death recorded.

Meanwhile, 1,303 infected Filipinos abroad were still undergoing treatment as of May 12 while 669, including the 25 new recoveries, have managed to recover from the disease.

“Based on the latest figures, the total number of Filipinos who recovered from COVID-19 at 669 remains more than twice than the total fatalities and is now almost 30% of the total confirmed cases,” DFA noted.

In the Philippines, authorities said Tuesday the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 has infected 11,350 individuals and killed 751 while 2,106 were able to recover. SARS-CoV-2 causes severe respiratory ailment COVID-19, which outbreak started in China’s Wuhan City in Hubei province in late 2019.

The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Globally, the virus already infected more than 4.2 million people and killed more than 287,350 as of May 12. On the other hand, over 1.5 million people have recovered so far from the disease.
