US Embassy sees ‘significant implications on’ PH-US alliance over VFA termination

MANILA, Philippines — The US Embassy in Manila sees as a “serious step with significant implications” on the alliance of the two countries following the Philippines’ move to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the embassy said it has been informed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines’ intent to abrogate the two-decades-old military accord between the two countries.

“This is a serious step with significant implications for the U.S.-Philippines alliance,” the embassy said.

“We will carefully consider how best to move forward to advance our shared interests,” it added.

Nevertheless, the embassy said the US remains committed to the friendly relations between the two nations.

“Our two countries enjoy a warm relationship, deeply rooted in history,” it said.

Earlier Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. signed and delivered to the embassy the notice of termination of the VFA, which will take effect after 180 days.

President Rodrigo Duterte was prompted to terminate the VFA   after the visa cancellation of his political ally former top cop and now Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

The VFA, which was ratified by the Senate in 1999, governs the conduct of US troops who take part in military exercises in the Philippines.
