Filipinos in Haiti safe after earthquake, says DFA

No Filipino was reported killed or injured in the 5.9 earthquake that struck Haiti late Saturday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Monday.

In a report submitted to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano by Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez, he said none of the estimated 500 Filipinos in Haiti were reported to be among the dead and injured in the earthquake as well as in the magnitude 5.2 aftershock that followed on Sunday.

Romualdez assured that Philippine Honorary Consul General Fitzgerald Brandt continues to monitor the situation and is ready to extend assistance to any Filipino who may have been affected by the earthquake.

Meanwhile, the DFA expressed its condolences to Haiti after at least 12 people were killed and 188 others were injured during the earthquake. /ee
