Korean community to hold memorial service for Jee
The Korean community in Manila will hold a memorial service on Monday for businessman Jee Ick-joo in Camp Crame, where he was slain in October last year following his arrest on false drug charges.
The incident, the first high-profile case that exposed a kidnap-extortion racket involving the police, prompted Manila to apologize to Seoul and promise an investigation.
It also stoked fears among some 90,000 Korean nationals in the Philippines.
The South Korean Embassy said a memorial would be held at the Philippine National Police multipurpose center at its headquarters in Quezon City on Monday afternoon.
Jee’s widow, Choi Kyung-jin, his daughter, South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Kim Jae-shi and members of the Korean community were expected to attend.
Koreans have been bringing flowers to the site where he was slain inside the PNP headquarters since news of his killing came to light.
