Talks, jazz, dance at SF Asian Art Museum for Fil-Am Month
SAN FRANCISCO – “Remembering the Past, Moving onto the Future” is this year’s theme of the Filipino American History Month celebrations at the Asian Art Museum.
Leaders in the community will come together to speak on issues of the past with contemporary perspectives Thursday, Sept. 29.
A jazz performance will follow the panel: “Remembrance and Jazz in the Philippines,” Thursday, Sept. 29, 6:30–8 p.m. Free with museum admission; $5 after 5 p.m. A focus of the evening will be dedicated to exploring the development of jazz and its roots in the Philippines. Longtime jazz musician Sugar Pie Desanto will be honored through the contemporary voice of Aireene Espiritu, who will sing some of Desanto’s works as well as some of her own originals.
On Sunday, Oct. 2, is the annual Fil-Am History Month celebration MOVEMENT through dance, spoken and written word, and martial arts. This year’s theme of MOVEMENT focuses on the traditions of dance, jazz, martial arts, word and art of the Philippines. Free admission courtesy of Target.
