Hawaii Flores de Mayo to showcase Filipino heritage May 14

HONOLULU — The 24th Annual Filipino Fiesta and Parade dubbed as “Flores de Mayo,” a one-day event, will be held on Saturday, May 14 with a parade from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., starting from Fort de Russy, going along Kalakaua Avenue and ending at Kapiolani Park, the Filipino Community (FilCom) Center announced.

The parade will feature Miss Filipina Hawaii and her court, marching bands, artistically decorated floats, marching groups manned by various Filipino civic, culture and community organizations proudly displaying their particular ethnic region of origin, heritage and culture from the Philippines.

After the parade, a Fiesta will be held at Kapiolani Park grounds from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m. where various food and cultural booths will showcase Filipino products ranging from food, artifacts, cultures and handicrafts, product samples to social, educational, business and health care services.

Non-stop entertainment will be staged at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand featuring local talents as well as performing artists from the mainland and television and movie personalities from the Philippines. These events are free and open to the public.

The event is anticipating participation from local community from all islands and over 100 Filipino community organizations, U.S. and or Philippine-based business owners and or their representatives who will showcase and market their products and services.

Major funding for this event came from a grant received from the City & County of Honolulu and title sponsorship of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue headed by Eddie Flores Jr., its president and owner.  L&L Hawaiian Barbecue has more than 200 franchises statewide, the U.S. mainland and internationally plans to include the promotion of the “Flores de Mayo” in its marketing thrust. In addition, FilCom will also be reaching out to various radio, TV, print and social media to promote this event.
