Filipina abandons newborn in Subway shop toilet in So. California

SAN FRANCISCO—Police charged a homeless Filipino woman with attempted murder when she abandoned her newborn after giving birth in a Subway sandwich shop toilet in West Covina, California last February 15.
Mary Grace Trinidad, described as “a local transient,” was found at a nearby car repair shop when police followed the trail of blood she left behind.
The baby boy was found partially submerged in toilet water, with the umbilical cord hanging from the toilet, a police spokesperson said. Trinidad is also charged with child abandonment.
A customer heard the newborn crying and alerted an employee at 8:30 a.m. The infant was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. The baby is in critical condition.
Police found and arrested Trinidad and took her to the same hospital as her baby for pregnancy-related issues. She was wanted for a previous narcotics charge. According to police, bail will be set at $2 million.
California passed the Safely Surrendered Baby Law to prevent newborns from being abandoned, and allowing parents to give up their infants within 72 hours of birth with no questions asked.
