Fil-Am judge to keynote Chicago PH Independence Day fete

CHICAGO, Illinois –The only elected Filipino American in the Illinois judiciary will be the keynote speaker at the celebration in the Greater Chicago area of the 117th Year of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

Judge Jessica Arong-O’Brien, elected three years ago to the Cook County Circuit Court, will speak on Saturday, June 13, at the 40th year annual Philippine Independence Week Committee’s (PIWC) dinner-ball gala night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois.

Before the celebration, Judge O’Brien also will be installed on June 4 as the 2015 president of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI).

PIWC chair Ellen Tan said that “Judge O’Brien will address the group’s theme, “Bayan Magiliw” (Beloved Homeland) by citing the importance of the rule of law in eliminating graft and corruption and protecting victims of human trafficking and human rights violations.”

There will be also the coronation of the PIWC beauty queens.  Consul General Generoso Calonge will give remarks in behalf of the Manila government.

PIWC will also have a community picnic on Sunday June 7 at Proesel Park in Lincolnwood,Illinois.

Other activities like essay contests for the youth, bowling tournament and a Senior’s health fair will be held on various dates.

Consular officials will host a brunch at their offices at 122 S. Michigan Avenue on June 12 after the traditional 9 a.m. flag ceremony at the Daley Plaza in the Chicago Loop.

Dr. Rufino Crisostomo, president of the Filipino American Council of Chicago (FACC), said that his group will hold an independence reception at their headquarters at Rizal Center, 1332 W.
