No Filipinos hurt in China earthquake–DFA

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday that there were no Filipino casualties in the earthquake in Yunnan province of China that has killed almost 400.

“Our Consulate General in Chongqing which has jurisdiction over Yunnan province, has confirmed that there are no Filipinos affected by the earthquake in Yunnan,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a press conference Monday.

“There are about 70 Filipinos in Yunnan province and throughout Southwest China there are 150, he said.

At least 381 people have been killed and thousands more injured after a magnitude 6.1 quake rocked the province Sunday afternoon.

China’s state news agency Xinhua, reported more than 12,000 destroyed houses and 30,000 more damaged near the epicenter which was 10 kilometers underground according to the United States Geological Survey.

Some 7,000 emergency personnel and 5,000 soldiers, police and firefighters rushed to the province to assist in rescue efforts.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was also reportedly going to visit the area, Xinhua said.
