CEBU CITY, Philippines—A Malaysian medical student in Cebu was killed Friday morning after he was hit by a van while riding an electric bike in Mandaue City.
The traffic investigators of the Mandaue City Police Office identified the victim as Chu Yau Hwa, 45, from 805 Jalan Orkid 3, Taman Rosa Sayang, Malaysia and temporary resident of Barangay Centro, Mandaue City.
PO1 Rolando Gelido, Mandaue traffic investigator, said that he was told by Dominic Duja of the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital that Chu was supposed to graduate from medicine this school year.
Chu was driving his electric bike along Ouano Avenue in Sitio Tribunal, Barangay Centro at 9 a.m. Friday when he was hit from behind by a Mitsubishi L300 van.
Gelido said Chu was thrown off his bike and dragged a few meters by the van until it stopped.
Chu was brought to Mandaue District Hospital where he later died due to severe injuries, he said.
Gelido said van driver Roger Pino claimed he was tailing the bicycle, which suddenly stopped.
Pino tried to evade the bike but there was another vehicle on the other lane, forcing him to hit Chu.
Pino was detained at Station 1 of the Mandaue City Police Office pending filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, Gelido said.
