MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Embassy in China assured the family of Dr. Nelson Bunyi that they will extend assistance and immediate repatriation for them after they were involved in the car crash in one of China’s famous tourist sites on Monday.
“[On Tuesday] morning, representatives from our embassy in Beijing visited the [family of Dr Bunyi] who were injured in the car crash yesterday (Monday) in Tiananmen Square,” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a text message.
“Our embassy has assured them of all appropriate assistance, particularly in their immediate repatriation and the repatriation of the remains of their loved one,” Hernandez said referring to Bunyi’s wife, Lina, who perished.
A Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) had reportedly ploughed into a crowd of tourists at the square before crashing. Five people were killed, three from the vehicle and two from the crowd. At least 38 more were injured.
Dr. Bunyi and his two daughters are among those injured. They are presently confined in Tongren hospital and are in stable condition, Hernandez said.
“[Lina Bunyi] was brought to Beijing hospital for treatment but she eventually succumbed to her injuries,” he said.
“The embassy continues its coordination with Beijing Public Security Bureau on the matter of repatriation and the latter’s ongoing investigation into the incident,” Hernandez added.
Philippine Medical Association (PMA) president Dr. Leo Olarte appealed to the government to help Bunyi, a former president of the PMA’s local chapter in Cavite, and his two daughters who needed surgery for multiple fractures they suffered from the accident.
