MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Embassy in China confirmed Tuesday that one Filipina was killed and three other Filipinos were injured in the car crash that occurred in China’s Tiananmen Square Monday.
“Per initial report of our Embassy in China, Beijing’s Public Security Bureau informed our Embassy that a Filipina was one of those killed in the car crash in Tiananmen Square earlier today,” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a text message.
“Three other Filipinos, a male and two females, were also injured and brought to the hospital. Our information is that the Filipino fatality and the three injured are tourists,” he said.
An SUV reportedly drove onto the pavement of the square which fronts the historic Forbidden City tourist site hitting several tourists before eventually crashing and burning.
Five people were killed, three in the car and two tourists, authorities reportedly said.
“Our Embassy is working to gather more details about this incident and to extend the necessary and appropriate assistance to the victims,” Hernandez said.
