Ex-honorary consul Dr. A. S. Macatangay; 78

MANILA, Philippines—Dr. Angelo S. Macatangay, former Philippine honorary consul general in Florida and one of New York’s leading physicians, died on Oct. 22 at the age of 78.

Macatangay graduated from Ateneo de Manila University and the University of Santo Tomas. He did his internship in Canada and New York, completing the program as chief resident at New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital. He went into private practice in Staten Island, New York.

He practiced anesthesiology, otolaryngology, and head and neck surgery for over 35 years. Macatangay was recognized by Castle Connolly as one of the Best Doctors in New York. He was founder and first president of the Philippine American Cultural and Civic Organization of Staten Island.  He was also the first Filipino to chair the Democratic Party Ball of Staten Island.

Two years into retirement, Macatangay was appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the first Philippine honorary consul general in Florida, USA. For 10 years, he and his wife, Maria Luisa Macatangay, served the Filipino community throughout the state.

Aside from his wife, Macatangay is survived by his daughter Anna Mendiola, son-in-law Dr. Lee Mendiola and grandson Mason Carmelo Mendiola; son John Paul Macatangay, daughter-in-law Nikki Macatangay and granddaughter Eliana Macatangay, and daughter lawyer Andrea Macatangay.

A Celebration of Life for Angelo S. Macatangay will be held during a one-day viewing at The Heritage Park, Bayani Road, Fort Bonifacio, on Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a Mass at 7 p.m.
