MM of Pangasinan has been texting Bantay OCW for assistance in contacting her husband in Saudi Arabia. However, her husband has not replied to our calls so it took us sometime to update MM.
Finally, MM’s husband took our call. We asked him why he stopped sending money to his family back home. The OFW angrily shot back that he would never send financial support to his wife again because she was allegedly having an affair with a man whom she was supporting. “Why would he waste his hard-earned money on his wife’s boyfriend?”
MM belied this accusation. The OFW, however, stood his ground. He decided that MM should bring their children to her parents and he would send the money directly to them.
Our embassies abroad do not have police power to coerce any OFW to send money to his family. Philippine laws do not cover any Filipino based abroad. MM may file an abandonment case against her husband if the husband returns home.
An OFW at 65
Is it possible for a person to work abroad at age 65?
Maximiano Mina of Pampanga has been an OFW off and on for a number of years. Now 65, he wants to return abroad to work. He says he is not used to being idle.
He went to the Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) to check if there was still a chance he could land a job. PTC recommended him to Lifelinks but there was no job opportunity open for him in Canada. In the meantime, Maximiano is not giving up his quest for a job abroad despite his age.
