Handuraw, meaning to reminisce or flash back, is a culmination of research and dances learned from indigenous groups and cultural bearers and masters in southern Philippines and United States.
“Handuraw: Remembering Traditions,” showcases rituals, rites of passage, courtship and wedding rites, music, ethnic textiles, ancient martial arts and storytelling through chant, according to Artistic Director Eric Solano.
A first of its kind on a proscenium stage in the Bay Area, Parangal’s Handuraw will take the audience on a journey back in time, crossing from the Sulu and Mindanao seas to the villages of Palawan and Mindanao.
“Sayap,” from this year’s 35th San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as an “opulently appointed narrative from Philippines…everything…bespoke artistry and commitment to the highest order.”
Along with the five main pieces, a few popular Filipino folk dances, like the well-known dance, Tinikling, will be presented to kick off the night. The show will feature guest artists from Eskabo Daan (Filipino Martial Arts) and music from Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company.
