Gancayco leads UPAA in Los Angeles

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles Area, Inc. (UPAAGLA) elected Victoria “Vicky” Achacoso-Gancayco, as its incoming president. The group has various projects, including a scholarship program for poor students in the Philippines. The group partnered with UP Mindanao last year and hopes to expand the program.

Another goal of UPAAGLA is to provide a platform for UP alumni in Southern California to network and help each other. Gancayco said she hopes to  expand and update the current database.

Gancayco, who graduated in 1977 from UP with Bachelor of Science in Statistics, will be assisted by the incoming set of officers: Arnel Joaquin, as president-elect; Nati Matitu-Mercado , first vice president; Mutch Carino, second vice president; Sonny Gancayco and Evelyn Andamo, secretaries; Gil Guinto, treasurer; Bob Shroder, assistant treasurer; Dick Cu, auditor; Maning Rivera, public relations officer and Bobby Canseco, director of information technology.

The board of directors consists of: Lester Arevalo, Nelson Borrero, Maribel Catala, Ivy Cosio-Bautista, Fely de la Cruz, Yvee Tadeo-Guevarra, Tina Escueta-Martin, Romy Mosqueda, Annie Nepomuceno, Juliet Posadas and Bennie Uy.

Outgoing president Jazz Gaite, Dors Maligalig, Frank Mamaril, Sonja Menor and Alma Onrubia are the alumni group’s advisors.

Induction rites will be held  on Aug. 24 at The LA Hotel.
