SAN FRANCISCO—“Harana,” winner of the New Filipino Cinema 2013 Audience Award, is returning for special screenings during the Pistahan festival in Yerba Buena Gardens.
Florante Aguilar, a classically trained guitarist from San Francisco, returned to the Philippines upon his father’s death, after 12 years of absence. Aguilar rediscovered the music of harana, a nearly forgotten tradition of Filipino serenading, where men sing under a window at night to declare their love for a woman.
Led by award-winning director Benito Bautista, “Harana” has riveted audiences with its treasure trove of beautiful Filipino music waiting to be rediscovered. Intent on preserving vanishing customs, the film (2012, 104 min, DCP) rekindles a connection with the past before it is irrevocably lost.
Producer Fides Enriquez will meet viewers at each 7 p.m. screening.
