Aussie tourist dies in hotel room in Manila

MANILA, Philippines—An elderly Australian tourist died early Monday inside his room at a five-star hotel in Manila after a one-week out of town holiday with his Filipino girlfriend.

Vincent Camardi, 65, a guest at the Hyatt Hotel along MH Del Pilar St. in Ermita was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians at the Manila Doctor’s Hospital apparently of cardiac arrest.

Senior Police Officer 2 Edmundo Cabal, of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section, said that the incident happened at around 1:45 a.m. inside the tourist’s room.

Cabal pointed out that Camardi arrived in the country on July 24 and initially checked in at a different hotel with his girlfriend, Joe-Anne De Leon, for an overnight stay.

The couple then proceeded to Boracay Island in Aklan, where they stayed for seven days flying back to Manila on Sunday and checking in at the Hyatt Hotel.

Cabal said that based on De Leon’s statement, she was talking with the Australian tourist when he suddenly collapsed on the bed which prompted her to seek the help of the hotel staff in bringing him to the nearest hospital. But the effort to save him proved futile.

The MPD homicide section has coordinated with the Australian Embassy to inform Camardi’s relatives of his death.
