No tsunami threat to PH from Papua New Guinea quake

MANILA, Philippines—There was no threat of a tsunami hitting the Philippines after a strong earthquake struck near Papua New Guinea and Indonesia at noon Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In a bulletin, Phivolcs said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, but the United States Geological Survey later revised this to 7.1.

“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” Phivolcs said.

But it noted that “earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the epicenter.”

“There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the bulletin said.
