DAVAO CITY—Aurora Rep. Sonny Angara, a senatorial candidate of Team PNoy, urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to investigate the death of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Kish Island in Iran last month.
The OFW, Johanna Lamo, was allegedly killed and dumped by the seaside on Kish Island.
Paul Cabrera, the victim’s fiancé, had asked Angara to help in transporting her body from Manila to Tagum City in Davao del Norte, where she will be buried.
Angara, in a statement sent to the Inquirer, said Cabrera claimed there was no police report filed with the Iranian authorities despite the allegations of foul play.
“I call on the DFA and OWWA to act with urgency and get to the bottom of this matter,” Angara said.
“Such things seem to be happening all too often to our overseas workers. It’s only right that the government ensures their security and safety wherever they are in the world,” he added.
Lamo had left for Iran to work and save up for her marriage to Cabrera.
Lamo’s body was scheduled to be transported to the Philippines on Thursday. Angara said his office will help facilitate the transport of her remains to Tagum City. Nico Alconaba, Inquirer Mindanao
