Ateneo taking applications for journalism fellowship

MANILA, Philippines—The Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University has announced that it is accepting applications for the 2013 Fellowships for the Master of Arts in Journalism.

The deadline for the submission of applications is Feb. 15.

The fellowships are awarded to full-time Asian journalists who have excellent professional and academic records, a commitment to good journalism and leadership qualities. The grant covers tuition and other expenses for the two-year MA Journalism program.

Since 2003, 99 journalists from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Philippines have received the grants.

Sixteen fellows from Cambodia, China, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines are currently enrolled for school year 2012-2013.

Designed for working journalists, the MA Journalism program is a hybrid distance-learning program. Online class sessions take place via the learning management system Blackboard, and classroom sessions are held on the Ateneo’s Loyola campus in Quezon City.

The curriculum consists of 12 courses, including courses in ethics and specialized reporting, and writing courses such as international reporting, investigative journalism and reporting about religions. The program’s design allows working journalists and other media professionals to study at their own pace and time, and in their own homes or workplaces. The international faculty includes experienced journalists and academics from Australia, Canada, United States, Britain, Germany, India, Malaysia and Philippines.

ACFJ, a joint project of the German-based Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation and the Ateneo, was founded in June 2000 to help raise the standard of journalism in Asia by providing training primarily for working journalists.

Application forms may be downloaded from https://ateneo.edu/acfj, or may be requested by e-mail from newsroom@admu.edu.ph.

The ACFJ may also be reached at tele. no. (632)9263253, (632)4266001  ext. 5215, or by fax (632)9263254.

For admission to the MA program, a separate set of application forms is required. These are also available from the ACFJ or from the Ateneo’s Office of Graduate Studies. For more information, visit the MA Journalism page on the ACFJ website (acfj.ateneo.edu).
