US warship docks in Manila Bay for routine port call – US embassy

MANILA, Philippines – The United States embassy in Manila on Monday said a US warship has docked in Manila Bay for a routine port call.

The USS Gridley (DDG-101, an Arleigh-Burke Class Destroyer, arrived in the country to allow the ship to replenish supplies and give its crew members an opportunity for rest and relaxation.

The embassy did not say how long the warship will stay in the country.

The ship is part of the part of the US Pacific Fleet and is homeported in San Diego, California. The ship was named after Captain Charles Gridley, Commander of the USS Olympia who was famously told by Admiral George Dewey to “fire when you’re ready, Gridley” in the Battle of Manila Bay during Spanish-American War.

The visit will highlight “strong historic, community, and military connections between the United States and the Republic of the Philippines,” the US Embassy said.
