Foreign affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said that according to the Philippine consul general in Vancouver the quake happened in Charlotte Islands which he said was a “remote and sparsely populated area in British Columbia.”
“No Filipino was reported to have been affected by the earthquake,” Hernandez said in a text message.
But Hernandez said the Philippine consulate in Vancouver “continues to monitor developments and is in touch with the Canadian authorities and the Filipino community leaders in the area.”
Charlotte Islands was rocked by a 7.7-magnitude quake and it was followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later.
A tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii after the earthquake.
