MANILA, Philippines – A United States (US) submarine will dock in Subic  for a routine port call Thursday, the US embassy in Subic said in an announcement.

The embassy said that the visit of USS Olympia (SSN 717), a submarine of the Los Angeles class design, “highlights the strong historic, community, and military connections” between the US and the Philippines.

“This visit will allow the ship to replenish supplies as well as give the crew an opportunity for rest and relaxation,” it said.

It said the submarine set sail in February 1986 to her home in Pearl Harbor and was the second US ship to be named in honor of the city of Olympia in Washington.

“The original USS Olympia was commissioned on 1895 and, as part of the Asiatic fleet, became the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898,” it said. Fat Reyes
