MANILA, Philippines—The international community joined the Philippines Tuesday as the nation mourned the death of Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, an official beloved for his advocacy for good governance and a heart that was always close to those he served.

United States Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr. offered the US Embassy’s sympathies to the families of Robredo and pilots Jessup Bahinting and Kshitiz Chand, who died in a plane crash off Masbate on Saturday.

“We stand with the people and government of the Philippines at this difficult time, and are prepared to assist the Philippine Government in the aftermath of this tragic accident,” said the Embassy.

British Ambassador Stephen Lillie also extended his government’s sympathies to the Philippines and the bereaved families of Robredo and the two pilots.

“The British Embassy is saddened by the death of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, Captain Jessup Bahinting and co-pilot Kshitiz Chand. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government of the Philippines and the families of Secretary Robredo, Captain Bahinting and Mr. Chand,” Lillie said in a statement sent to reporters.
