MANILA, Philippines—The European Union’s delegation to the Philippines on Wednesday said that a local humanitarian expert was assessing the damage to the country brought about by the heavy rains that hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces on Tuesday.

In a statement released Wednesday, Lubomir Frebort, Charge d’ Affaires of the Delegation, said “The Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines extends its deep sympathy to more than 800,000 people affected by the heavy downpour in three regions.”

The statement also noted that a local humanitarian aid expert was assessing the situation to determine the assistance to be provided in line with the European Union’s policy of providing humanitarian aid to victims of disasters.
