MANILA, Philippines—Lipa City Archbishop Ramon Arguelles expressed dismay on Malacañang’s move allowing American soldiers to use their former military bases, said a report on Radyo Inquirer early Thursday.

The archbishop said it is contrary to what the mother of President Benigno Aquino III did during her incumbency.

He said former President Cory Aquino was the one who opposed the presence of American military troops.

Arguelles warned there will be massive protest rallies to prevent the return of US military bases in the country.

The Philippines has been home to several US military bases, which are now converted into economic zones and government-run eco-tourism sites.

The biggest are the former Subic Naval Base, which covers Olongapo City and neighboring towns in Zambales province; and Clark Air Base, which covers towns in Pampanga and Tarlac.
