Senate OKs five international resolutions on third reading

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate on Monday approved, on its third and final reading, five international resolutions on aviation security, criminal justice cooperation, space activities, higher education, and taxation.

In a roll call vote, 19 senators, with no abstentions or objections, approved the following resolutions aimed at strengthening the Philippines’ participation in international agreements:

• Senate Resolution No. 622, which seeks concurrence in the accession to the Protocol to Amend the Convention on Offenses and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft, strengthening the legal framework for offenses committed aboard aircraft.
• Senate Resolution No. 624, providing concurrence in the ratification of the Philippine-India Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, which establishes mechanisms for cooperation in investigating, prosecuting, and preventing crimes between India and the Philippines.
• Senate Resolution No. 625, concurring in the ratification of the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects, providing a framework for liability and compensation for damage caused by space objects.
• Senate Resolution No. 626, which seeks concurrence in the Philippines’ accession to the Asia-Pacific Regional Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education, facilitating the recognition of Filipino academic qualifications abroad.
• Senate Resolution No. 628, concurring in the ratification of the Philippines–Cambodia Agreement on the Elimination of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income, which seeks to prevent double taxation and strengthen bilateral economic ties.

The approval of these measures is expected to improve the country’s cross-border cooperation while also supporting the country’s economic, educational, and security interests. /cb
