A Filipina caregiver accused of stealing more than $7,000 from a 94-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor and allowed him to live in squalor under her care was sentenced to two years in jail.
A San Diego judge sentenced 63-year-old Milagros Angeles on Thursday, after she plead guilty last month to felony charges of forgery and false imprisonment of an elder.
Last year, Angeles was charged with false imprisonment of an elder, theft by a caretaker, elder abuse, and possession of altered checks after police found Arnold “Max” Bauer (a Pearl Harbor survivor who suffers from dementia among other ailments) at his home living in squalor. Authorities said they found Bauer surrounded by trash and rat droppings.
Police then found Angeles, Bauer’s live-in caretaker at the time, in a bedroom with several thousands of dollars stuffed in her clothing. Police found $9,000 hidden inside her room and discovered she had written more than 50 checks to herself totaling $5,600. Police believe she was sending money to a bank in the Philippines.
Bauer passed away due to pneumonia at a Chula Vista rest home, according to reports from San Diego.
According to U-T San Diego, Angeles (who has been in jail since her arrest) has already served more than a year in jail, which will count toward her sentence. Joseph Pimentel/AJPress
