Asean 2026 in Cebu: Travelers urged to arrive early at airport

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) has released travel guidelines ahead of an expected surge in passenger traffic beginning Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Authorities anticipate heavier airport activity as Cebu hosts the 48th Asean Leaders’ Summit through May 8, 2026.

Consequently, MCIAA imposes enhanced security measures and expects traffic congestion during this period.

4-hour lead time

Due to this, MICAA advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least three to four hours prior to their scheduled departure for international flights, and two to three hours for domestic flights.

The lead times take into account heavier passenger volume and tighter security, and summit-related movements that may disrupt travel.

The airport will also impose stricter security screening. MCIAA advises travelers to bring valid IDs and travel documents, avoid bringing restricted items, and expect additional inspections.

Travelers can also expect flight delays, so passengers are advised to monitor their flight status regularly and stay updated via airline notifications.

Minimize carry-on items

Meanwhile, to move faster through checkpoints, MCIAA urged passengers to minimize carry-on items, pack liquids and electronics properly, and use online check-in if possible.

The agency urges passengers to stay updated through MCIAA advisories, airline announcements, news, and traffic updates.

MCIAA, moreover, urged the public to strictly follow aviation safety rules, which include prohibitions on flying drones, kites, and laser pointers near the airport. /dl
