Garbin seeks security for Zaldy Co’s return to Philippines

NAGA CITY — A lawmaker on Friday (April 17) urged the government to ensure the safety of former representative and businessman Zaldy Co upon his return to the Philippines, saying his testimony could shed light on the alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr. of the Ako Bicol Party List told the Inquirer in a phone interview that Co is expected to disclose more information after releasing a series of social media videos, although key details remain unrevealed.
“Knowing him for the past three years, he stands firm on what he says. His word is his bond,” Garbin said.
The lawmaker said protecting Co is crucial if authorities want to establish the truth behind the controversy.
“If we want to know the truth, we need his testimony to put an end to this flood control mess,” he said.
Garbin added that Co’s safety should be assured, noting that the former lawmaker is both an accused and a key figure who could help clarify the allegations and determine accountability.
Co earlier surfaced in online videos alluding to alleged irregularities in flood control projects and linking President Marcos Jr. to supposed large sums of money carried in several pieces of luggage.
But Co stopped short of providing full details.
The issue has drawn attention online and among government officials, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into flood control projects and the use of public funds.
Marcos earlier said Co had been arrested in the Czech Republic, but no further details about the circumstances of the arrest have been disclosed.
Garbin said he has tried to reach Co’s family for more information but he has yet to get a response.
“I am exerting all efforts to reach out to his family to know more about the details of his arrest,” he said. /apl
