The DAR award is open to all senior high school students enrolled in private and public accredited schools in good standing. The recipient of the award must have proven qualities in four selection criteria: Dependability (truthfulness, loyalty, punctuality); Service (cooperation, courtesy, considerations of others); Leadership (personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and Patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree.
Horner is also currently a semi-finalist in the Claes Nobel (from the same family that awards the Nobel Prize) High School Scholarship. The winner will be announced later in April 2012.
She has been recognized twice by the State of Ohio for being “a champion of literacy … specifically for promoting literacy amongst peers and in the community” and “exemplary accomplishments as a youth”.
Horner was also recognized on April 19, 2011 by her school’s Board of Education for “Leading, Instructing, and Inspiring the Power of the Pen Team to Become Better Writers”.
Yvette, as she is fondly called by family and friends, is the current Youth Chair for Region 3 of the National Federation of Filipino American Association and a current candidate to the Filipino-American Young Leaders Program.
Horner is the salutatorian of Greenville Senior High School Class of 2012 that will be conferred on June 2. She is currently in the process of making a decision which university with strong creative writing program she will attend.
She has been offered admission, merit scholarship, and inclusion in the honor’s/core student group in at least two of the top 10 national ranked universities in the field of creative writing.
