Securing Zaldy Co’s return a multi-agency effort, says DFA

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday clarified its role in efforts to repatriate former Ako Bicol party-list Representative and House appropriations chair Elizaldy “Zaldy” Co, following remarks by Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla suggesting the matter rested solely with the DFA.

In its statement, the DFA acknowledged the DILG’s collaboration but emphasized that securing Co’s repatriation requires a “whole-of-government” approach, including Interpol coordination and cooperation among other law enforcement and judicial agencies.

“Secretary Remulla’s view that the matter rests solely ‘up to the DFA’ does not fully capture this joint action across government agencies,” the DFA said.

Co, who is reportedly hiding in a gated community in Lisbon, Portugal, faces graft and malversation charges linked to a P289.5-million flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.

Remulla said in an interview with DZBB that the two-month manhunt for Co is no longer under his office’s jurisdiction. 

He added that the DFA would handle the diplomatic steps necessary for Co’s return.

The DFA also reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, urging the public to provide any information on Co’s whereabouts to support authorities.

It affirmed that it stands ready to provide diplomatic assistance within its mandate and in accordance with established protocols. /gsg
