Philippines dismisses Chinese protest over island

/ 08:10 PM March 28, 2012

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines has brushed aside a Chinese protest and says it will go ahead with construction of a ferry wharf on an island occupied by Filipino troops but claimed by Beijing in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

Government spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the Philippines considers Pagasa part of its territory. Last week China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its claim of sovereignty over the island it refers to as Zhongye, and said it opposes any illegal activities there.

Valte said Wednesday that the government believes the construction will not escalate tensions with China.

The Philippines plans to hold military exercises with the US in the area next month. Last year, Manila accused China of harassing a Philippine oil exploration ship.
